Frequently asked questions

Coverage basics, Arizona liquor and employment rules, and how we work with owners.

What insurance does a bar or restaurant need?

Most start with general liability, property and business income, and workers’ compensation. If you serve alcohol, add liquor liability. Many operations also carry assault and battery, employment practices liability, cyber, spoilage and equipment breakdown, commercial auto, and umbrella coverage.

What is liquor liability insurance?

Liquor liability covers claims when a guest who was served alcohol injures someone or causes damage, including dram shop lawsuits. It protects the business that sold or served the alcohol.

Does general liability insurance cover liquor claims?

Often not for businesses that sell or serve alcohol. Many general liability policies exclude liquor liability for licensees, which is why bars and restaurants carry a separate liquor liability policy.

Does general liability cover fights at my bar?

Often it does not. Many hospitality general liability policies exclude or limit assault and battery claims, so bars, nightclubs, and late-night restaurants usually need dedicated assault and battery coverage.

Is Arizona a dram shop state?

Yes. Under A.R.S. 4-311, a liquor licensee can be held liable for injuries, deaths, or property damage when it sells alcohol to an obviously intoxicated person, or to someone under 21 without requesting ID, and that drinking is a proximate cause of the harm.

Is a bar liable for serving a minor with a fake ID?

Under A.R.S. 4-311, underage liability applies when a licensee sells without requesting ID or knowing the guest is under 21. Following the four ID steps in A.R.S. 4-241 and recording the ID is your strongest protection.

Who needs Title 4 training in Arizona?

Owners, agents, and managers involved in day-to-day operations must complete Title 4 Basic and Management training before a license is issued. Certificates are valid for three years.

How does my alcohol share affect my liquor liability rate?

Underwriters rate your actual alcohol share, not just your license. In our experience, staying at or below about 30% alcohol sales keeps you in the most favorable Arizona markets.
