Late nights carry the highest liquor risk

Bar and nightclub insurance is a liquor-focused commercial insurance program for venues that sell alcohol, manage crowds, and operate late. It is built to address over-service and dram shop claims, fights and security incidents, slips on crowded floors, occupancy and fire risk, staff injuries during late shifts, and card or ticketing fraud. Standard policies often limit or exclude the liquor and violence exposures that can decide a claim.

Why bar coverage matters

These figures show how alcohol service connects bars to drunk driving, violence, and crowd risk. Sources: Journal of Safety Research, Bureau of Justice Statistics, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and National Fire Protection Association.

  • Of arrested intoxicated drivers had their last drink at a licensed bar or restaurant (Journal of Safety Research) 50%

Liquor Liability Coverage

How we insure bars and nightclubs

Bar & Restaurant Insurance builds your program around liquor revenue share, hours and capacity, security staffing, entertainment, and the insurance requirements in the venue lease.

What we review before we quote

We check existing policies for assault and battery exclusions, liquor sublimits, and security gaps, then review limits at every renewal as hours, events, staffing, and venue operations change.

FAQ

Bar and nightclub insurance FAQs

Straight answers for bar and nightclub operators.

What insurance does a bar need?

Most bars need liquor liability, general liability, property and business income, and workers' compensation. Depending on the operation, you may also need assault and battery, employment practices, cyber, and umbrella coverage. The right mix depends on alcohol revenue, closing time, capacity, entertainment, security, payroll, and lease requirements.

What is dram shop liability, and how does liquor liability insurance respond?

Dram shop liability is the legal exposure a bar can face after serving alcohol to a person who later causes injury or property damage. Liquor liability insurance can respond to covered claims with defense and indemnity, subject to the policy's limits, exclusions, and state law. The wording matters because dram shop rules differ by jurisdiction.

Does general liability cover fights in a bar?

Often, no. Many general liability policies exclude assault and battery or restrict it with a low sublimit. Review the exclusion and endorsement language before binding so fights, ejections, and alleged failures by security are addressed intentionally.

Are bouncers and security staff covered by bar insurance?

Coverage depends on whether security staff are employees or contractors and on the assault and battery wording. Workers' compensation can address employee injuries, while assault and battery coverage can address covered incidents involving security actions. A contractor's certificate and agreement should be reviewed, but they do not replace your own coverage.

Why is bar insurance more expensive than restaurant insurance?

Bar insurance usually costs more because bars tend to have a higher alcohol revenue share, later closing times, denser crowds, dancing, entertainment, and more security exposure. Capacity, loss history, jurisdiction, property protection, and the breadth of assault and battery coverage also affect carrier placement and price.

Does bar insurance cover live music, DJs, and special events?

It can, but the entertainment and event schedule must be disclosed to the carrier. Live music, DJs, dancing, ticketed events, outside promoters, added capacity, and temporary security can change underwriting and required endorsements. Confirm coverage before adding a new event format.
